Stitched Memory
Birthdays

The shirt they wore all year,
stitched into a keepsake they'll keep.

by Katie

A handcrafted keepsake bear or pup made from a favorite garment — a baby outfit, a teenage hoodie, a year of team tees. The kind of birthday gift that does not end up in a donation bag by November.

Why a birthday keepsake

A birthday gift with weight — not something to outgrow.

Most birthday gifts age out within a year. A keepsake made from something the person actually wore during that year becomes an object that marks it permanently. First birthday from a first outfit. Sweet-sixteen from a favorite hoodie. Fiftieth from the flannel he wore every weekend. The keepsake is the birthday gift that becomes a bookmark.

What to send

What to send for a birthday keepsake

One garment is enough for a single keepsake. Sending two or more pieces Katie can combine is a small +$20 upgrade — because piecing the story together by hand takes noticeably longer at the machine.

The shirt they actually wore

Not the one saved for photos — the one that lived in the laundry basket. Cotton shirts, flannel, soft knits. The fabric with wear-marks is usually the one that carries the most of them.

A favorite hoodie or sweatshirt

Soft cotton and cotton blends work wonderfully. Pockets, drawstrings, screen-printed logos — most of it usually survives the transformation.

Something from a specific season

A team tee, a concert shirt, a uniform top — anything that marks a year or a chapter. Piecing a specific season into the keepsake makes it a bookmark you can hold.

A baby or childhood piece

A onesie, a favorite toddler dress, the blanket they wouldn't let go of. Small keepsakes often want small fabric memories inside.

A note on fabric: Cotton, wool, flannel, and cotton blends work beautifully. Slick modern athletic polyester (most pro-style dri-fit jerseys) doesn't piece cleanly. If you're unsure, send Katie a photo first — she's happy to tell you what will work.

How it works

From a stack of clothing to something they'll keep

Turnaround is four to six weeks from the day your clothing arrives at Katie's studio, plus shipping.

01

Send the clothes

Pick the garments that carry the story. We send a prepaid label; you pack and ship.

02

Katie stitches it by hand

Each keepsake is cut and sewn one at a time. Pockets, logos, buttons, patches — every detail that made the garment theirs is placed with intention.

03

Theirs to keep

The finished keepsake arrives with a sewn-in NFC tag that opens a private gallery — a place for the candle-blowing photos, the voicemail from a grandparent, the little moments that otherwise scatter across a camera roll.

Birthdays questions

The ones families ask most

Is this a first-birthday gift or adult-birthday gift?
Either. Some of our most-loved commissions are first-birthday keepsakes built from the first-year onesies. Just as many are fiftieth, sixtieth, seventieth birthday keepsakes made from the favorite flannel the person has worn for decades. The craft is the same — the fabric changes with the age.
When do I need to order?
At least sixty days before the birthday for a guaranteed arrival. Four to six weeks craft plus shipping means earlier orders always ease the worry. A late keepsake still makes a beautiful "something arrived from Katie" moment — but the big reveal lands best on the day.
What kinds of clothing work best?
Cotton shirts, flannel, soft knits, baby clothes, team tees, cotton-blend hoodies. Slick modern athletic polyester (most dri-fit jerseys) does not piece cleanly. If you are unsure about something, send Katie a photo first — she is happy to tell you what will work and what will not.
How long does it take?
Four to six weeks from the day your clothing arrives at the studio, plus about a week of shipping on each end. For time-sensitive gifts we recommend starting at least sixty days before the date — earlier is always better than a rush.
What if I want a keepsake after the date has passed?
Every bit as meaningful — often more so, once the moment has settled. A lot of families commission keepsakes weeks or months after the holiday, the service, or the milestone. The story does not have a deadline.
